Film Fest: Denzel Washington

Film Fest: Denzel Washington

Denzel Washington has always been one of my favourite actors and so I watched a number of his films recently that I had never seen. My favourites of his prior to this fest were Crimson Tide, Virtuosity, and Training Day. I believe he is in control of his performance to a degree that most do not reach, he shows you what he wants you to see. His intensity in Crimson Tide opposite Gene Hackman inspired the underdog in me and…

Last Christmas & Doctor Sleep

Last Christmas & Doctor Sleep

I got into the festive mood a month early this year when I saw Last Christmas in theatres on the weekend. This rom-com stars Emilia Clarke as someone who makes many bad choices until she meets Henry Golding’s character, conveniently around the holidays. Emma Thompson co-stars, stealing every scene she’s in, and she co-wrote the screenplay. Michelle Yeoh also co-stars, surprising in a non-conventional role for her, (her and Golding both last appeared in Crazy Rich Asians). There are fun,…

Film Fest: 20 Thrills

Film Fest: 20 Thrills

These 20 have a mix of thrilling, scary, or a Halloween-ish vibe. My favourite viewing in this batch was seeing The House with a Clock in it’s Walls. My wife and I are fans of Jack Black (Goosebumps), Cate Blanchett (Lord of the Rings), and the magical, spooky effects, (not unlike Harry Potter). I was surprised to see Eli Roth (Hostel) directing his first non-R rated film and I could see him pushing boundaries for this PG fantasy about a…

Playing in Theatres

Playing in Theatres

I was planning on seeing and writing about the new Spider-Man: Far from Home movie, (how much cooler would it be to say it was part 7 of an on-going character arc?), but I didn’t see it yet. I wonder if it is the movie now out that I want to see the most? These 15 films are currently in theatres, listed in order of recent box office totals: Toy Story 4 – I will see someday, only saw the…

Canadian Bacon

Canadian Bacon

After getting rained on during a Canada Day parade, my comfort flick was Canadian Bacon. Perhaps it was the fever brought on by the strong winds with cold showers while wearing shorts, but I laughed a lot watching this. This was my second viewing on dvd and was surprised at how relevant it is with modern times. I especially loved the senses of humor throughout the film from star John Candy, (as an American sheriff), to writer/director Michael Moore, (his…

The Night Before

The Night Before

To start my holiday movie season, my wife and I watched The Night Before at home on Blu-Ray. We laughed all the way through and enjoyed the comedic trio of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogan, and Anthony Mackie. The three play best friends who routinely party hard at Christmas time and this year go looking for the biggest party they’ve ever been to. Rogan naturally plays the goofy one, constantly battling the effects of numerous narcotics but due to him reigning…

Film Fest – Tom Cruise

Film Fest – Tom Cruise

I watched a number of Tom Cruise films recently while also looking after my newborn son, (Anders is now 2 months old!). Having a kid gave me both plenty of time to have something playing on the tv and plenty of reasons not to pay full attention to them. My wife Jodie and I have made it out of the house on occasion, such as to see Mission: Impossible 6 – Fallout in theatres, and I made it my mission…

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

My wife is fan of Jude Law (I’ve liked him too since first seeing him in 1997’s Gattaca) and we have enjoyed seeing the last few Guy Ritchie directed movies (both Sherlock Holmes– also starring Law, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E.), so we decided to watch King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. Besides Ritchie’s involvement (he also co-writes), I looked forward to this film because I enjoy the myth and movies of King Arthur (see also 2004’s King Arthur, 1995’s…
