While We’re Young

While We’re Young

While We’re Young is a comedy drama about a middle-aged couple’s marriage and careers that get impacted by the introduction of a younger couple into their lives starring Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts. The film is rated 14A, filmed in New York City, and explores the lives of a childless couple who have friends their own age but become good friends who are a generation younger and they wonder which parts of which lives are best. Like most smaller budget films shot in NYC, it loves showing off the city at the street level, following the leads discussing their issues, and using interesting houses (inside and outside). The soundtrack includes David Bowie’s “Golden Years”, Naomi Watts learned how to dance to hip hop for her role, and has many references to filmmaking as a character in the film is a director. Part mystery, part documentary, the film could fit into multiple genres and allows Ben Stiller to both be funny (which he is known for) and dramatic (which he is more than capable of). Always interesting to see a filmmaker’s take on drug use, the film touches on many different parts of the couple’s lives including health (humans get old), fashion (hat anyone?), and finances (double income no kids, sort of). The Blu-ray includes a behind the scenes featurette.
