Kids in the Hall: Death Comes to Town
The Kids in the Hall made a mini series after touring together, years after their show ended, and they have not forgotten how to push each other for the laughs. I started watching their original tv show (5 seasons, 1988-1994) when I was too young to understand all of the jokes and references, they have no doubt influenced my own sense of humor. It was probably the first show I really liked that my parents didn’t care for me watching, that seemed to make it cooler. They were all Canadian, hilarious each with their own unique talents, and when they got together the laughs were multiplied (and dirtier). They made the movie Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy in 1996, have performed live on stage, and got back together for this mini-series which differed from their sketch comedy show as there was an on going story throughout. The title is the plot, there are some deaths in a small (fictional) Canadian town, and each of the 5 leads all play multiple characters. Even the opening theme music is catchy like the original show’s, although that one is hard to beat by Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet.

Director Kelly Makin also directed multiple segments on the original show, Brain Candy, as well as Mickey Blue Eyes (1999 starring Hugh Grant) and numerous episodes tv shows like Queer as Folk (11 episodes 2003-2005) and Flashpoint (12 episodes 2008-2012). The mini-series was written by the 5 leads. Dave Foley is also known for NewsRadio (5 seasons 1995-1999), A Bug’s Life (1998), and was most recently seen in Dr. Ken (2 seasons 2015-2017). Bruce McCulloch recently wrote, directed, and starred in Young Drunk Punk (all 13 episodes, 2015). Kevin McDonald was in 6 episodes of That ’70s Show (2000-2001), and has done voice work for multiple Lilo & Stitch productions (2002-2015), Invader ZIM (2001-2003), Johnny Bravo (1997-2004), WordGirl (2008-2010), and The Penguins of Madagascar (2009-2011). Also unique to this production was the involvement of actors other than the lead 5, including Colin Mochrie (from Whose Line Is It Anyway? 2005-2007) and Susan Kent (currently on This Hour Has 22 Minutes, 2011-2017). Dave was unrecognizable playing the wife of the mayor and the abortionist doctor, great red herring. Bruce balanced playing the jerk Mayor and Lawyer with the loveable Ricky, one line with his higher pitched voice and I am laughing. Do go if you get a chance to see his live show or read his book, Let’s Start a Riot: How A Young Drunk Punk Became A Hollywood Dad. Kevin plays the ineffective Marnie and defence attorney easily, found his sound recorder role on the news team interesting for him to play. Scott walked the fine line playing the criminal Crim, Heather Weather, and the coroner all to creepy and funny perfection. Mark stole many scenes with his range as Death, the lead news reporter Corrinda, and the judge. As Death, it seemed like they would find the most unflattering angle to shoot him from and they would use it, usually causing a reaction just from the sight of his outfit (or lack thereof). Some of my favorite moments were Scott getting all the items that he had the cops secure from the crime scene (“bag it”), seeing Bruce and Mark back as the police officers (shots fired, officer down!), and seeing another returning character in Chicken Lady made me want the Kids in the Hall to make an on going show playing all of the characters in it. The mystery was enough to move the plot along, plenty of laughs throughout, and after only 8 episodes, the team made a series that left me wanting more.
