Kids in the Hall: Same Guys, New Dresses
Two days ago I finished watching the Kids in the Hall mini-series Death Comes to Town (2010) and because it is Mark McKinney’s birthday, I still had a craving for more! Same Guys, New Dresses is a documentary directed by Dave Foley about the group’s 2000 tour across Canada showing scenes from their stage show but really showing more behind the scenes. Including portions of their rehearsals, traveling, eating, and talking about personal matters all throughout the film, which was 6 years since the end of their hit show (1988-1994) and 4 years since their only movie Brain Candy (1996). I found the mentions of their past projects the most interesting because to them it was not always constant laughs, it was as much a job as it was a funny endeavor, and you get a feel for the different strengths and challenges each member brings to the group. Some of the filming can be shaky, but it adds more to the feeling like you are actually in the dressing room with the Kids (they actually do film from there, so you actually are in the dressing room). There are some celebrity cameos, either in the film or as part of the full length commentary, including Conan O’Brien, Mike Myers, and South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker. Also included in the dvd are bonus scenes, photos, and biographies. Next on my watch list (when I find a copy) is their 2002 documentary, Tour of Duty centered on their performance in Vancouver as part of their 2002 tour.
Thank you Kids in the Hall and Happy Birthday Mark!
