IMAX: Mountain Gorilla
Having recently watched some more recently made nature videos, I wanted to watch some older ones such as the IMAX and National Geographic produced Mountain Gorilla which came out in 1992. IMAX films are often less than 1 hour long, have great resolution (in spite of watching on a DVD), and capture some amazing moments in the wild. This short documentary takes its time getting to the gorillas and the narration is paced and voiced in a stuffy science class manner but it also has some wonderful shots of gorillas in their natural habitat filmed in Parc National des Volcans, Rwanda (the same park which was used by zoologist Dian Fossey). Not diving too far into the science of studying gorillas, the film serves more as a showcase of gorilla behaviour in the wild, and you fall in love with the young ones who seem to play all day while the adults eat. Director Adrian Warren next directed IMAX: The Secret of Life on Earth (1993 narrated by Patrick Stewart), and Mountain Gorilla was narrated by Rebecca Jenkins who previously narrated The Famine Within (1990). The DVD includes an under 5 minute behind the scenes with interviews of the crew.
