Remembering Martin Landau

Martin Landau was born on June 20th, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York, was a cartoonist at age 17, and got into the Actors Studio drama school in New York at age 27. There he studied with Steve McQueen, was best friends with James Dean, and after several tv appearances was seen in North by Northwest (1959 mystery directed by Alfred Hitchcock). He appeared in the films Cleopatra (1963 drama with Elizabeth Taylor), The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965 drama with Max von Sydow), 3 seasons of Mission: Impossible (1966-1969, action with Peter Graves), and 2 seasons of Space: 1999 (1975-1977, sci-fi with Barbara Bain). Landau earned Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actor for his roles in Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988 drama with Jeff Bridges) and Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989 comedy written and directed by Woody Allen), and he won on his third nomination for Ed Wood (1994 comedy with Johnny Depp). Other films Martin appeared in include The X-Files: Fight the Future (1998 sci-fi with David Duchovny), Rounders (1998 drama with Matt Damon), Shiner (2000 crime with Michael Caine), The Majestic (2001 drama with Jim Carrey), Lovely, Still (2008 romance with Ellen Burstyn), episodes of Entourage (2006-2008 comedy with Kevin Connolly) and the movie Entourage (2015 comedy with Adrian Grenier), and episodes of Without a Trace (2004-2009 crime with Anthony LaPaglia). His voice work included episodes of Spider-Man (1995-1996 animated), 9 (2009 animated with Elijah Wood) and Frankenweenie (2012 animated directed by Tim Burton), and was most recently seen in The Last Poker Game (2017 comedy with Paul Sorvino). Also known for being an acting coach, inspired by his own mentor Lee Strasberg, Martin coached Jack Nicholson and Anjelica Huston. Martin Landau passed away on July 15, 2017.
