The new releases in theatres Friday September 15 include American Assassin (action thriller) and Mother! (horror mystery). American Assassin is an action thriller involving counterterrorism starring Dylan O’Brien and Michael Keaton. The film is rated 14A, was filmed in England and Italy, and is based on the novel by Vince Flynn of the same name from 2010. It has 4 screenwriters and is directed by Michael Cuesta who recently did episodes for Billions (2016 drama now starring Toby Leonard Moore) and Second Chance (2016 sci-fi drama with Robert Kazinsky), the tv movie Babylon Fields (2014 drama with Skeet Ulrich), and Kill the Messenger (2014 crime drama with Jeremy Renner). The music is composed by Steven Price who also did Baby Driver (2017 crime written and directed by Edgar Wright), and Suicide Squad (2016 action with Will Smith). Dylan O’Brien was most recently in Teen Wolf (2011-2017 action horror series), and Deepwater Horizon (2016 action drama with Mark Wahlberg). Michael Keaton was most recently in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017 action sci-fi) and The Founder (2016 drama about the dramatic rise of McDonald’s).

Mother! is a horror mystery about a couple’s relationship which is strained when uninvited guests arrive at their home starring Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem. The film is rated 18A, was filmed in Québec, and was written and directed by Darren Aronofsky who most recently made Noah (2014 adventure with Russell Crowe) and the 5 Oscar nominated Black Swan (2010 thriller with Natalie Portman who won for her role). Composer Jóhann Jóhannsson recently worked on In the Blood (2016 drama) and Arrival (2016 sci-fi with Amy Adams), and the trailer makes it look like there are plenty of creepy moments for Lawrence to react to. She was previously in Passengers (2016 sci-fi with Chris Pratt) and X-Men: Apocalypse (2016 sci-fi action with James McCoy), while Javier Bardem was most recently in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017 adventure with Johnny Depp) and The Last Face (2016 drama with Charlize Theron). Also appearing in the film is Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer, Brian Gleeson, and Domhnall Gleeson.
