The new releases this weekend include American Made (action comedy starring Tom Cruise) and Flatliners (sci-fi horror with Ellen Page). American Made is about a pilot (Cruise who does all his own flying) who gets involved with the CIA and the drug trade in the 1980s. Directed by Doug Liman (who also made Edge of Tomorrow with Cruise in 2014, as well as Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2005 and The Bourne Identity in 2002) and written by Gary Spinelli (Stash House, 2012), the film also stars Domhnall Gleeson (The Revenant, 2015) and Sarah Wright (Marry Me, 2014-2015). Flatliners is about five medical students that take part in a risky experiment that may explore the afterlife. Directed by Niels Arden Oplev (who last made the Denmark drama Speed Walking in 2014), screenplay by Ben Ripley (Boychoir, 2014), and is an update on the 1990 version written by Peter Filardi (starring Kiefer Sutherland). The new version also stars Diego Luna (Rogue One, 2016) and Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries, 2009-2017). Based on revenue, the top 5 film in theatres are It (horror), Kingsman: The Golden Circle (action comedy), The LEGO Ninjago Movie (animated action), Battle of the Sexes (comedic true story), and American Assassin (action).
