Californication
Californication is a comedic drama series about a writer (played by David Duchovny) who struggles to have balance in his life between his family, acquaintances, and his career. Hank Moody (Duchovny) wrote a book that put him on the map but has since floundered while keeping in touch with his daughter (Madeleine Martin), her mother (Natascha McElhone), his agent (Evan Handler), and his agent’s wife (Pamela Adlon). Originally on the Showtime network, the show never shied away from adult content like nudity (both genders) and having the characters talk frankly about sex, love, and their careers. It dealt with mature subject matter (both with heart and humour), used flashbacks to help give weight in years to the drama (especially between Duchovny and McElhone’s characters), and was filmed in California (you would hope so). Creator Tom Kapinos previously wrote episodes for Dawson’s Creek (2000-2003 drama with James Van Der Beek) and was inspired to write more about what he cared about, more grown up relationships. He has since created the series Lucifer (2015-present crime fantasy about the devil living in Los Angeles starring Tom Ellis) and White Famous (2017-present comedy about an African-American comedian starring Jay Pharoah). David Duchovny is no stranger to tv having starred in Red Shoe Diaries (1992-1996 romance drama), The X-Files (1993-2018 sci-fi with Gillian Anderson, now renewed for season 11), and Aquarius (2015-2016 crime thriller about Charles Manson set in the 1960s). Natascha McElhone was previously in the mini-series Revelations (2005 fantasy mystery with Bill Pullman) and is currently in Designated Survivor (2016-2017 drama thriller with Kiefer Sutherland). The show had numerous guest stars over the years including Kathleen Turner, Carla Gugino, Maggie Grace, RZA, Heather Graham, and Rob Lowe.
