A Quiet Place

A Quiet Place

I looked forward to seeing this movie because I like the 2 leads, Emily Blunt (Sicario, Edge of Tomorrow) and John Krasinski (13 Hours, The Office), and the thrill of danger while trying to be silent (great trailer for showing just enough to peak my interest). At a quick 90 minutes, A Quiet Place flies along establishing a family you care about (not counting the fact the leads are a couple in real life), and puts them in plenty of danger. The film is about a family who must remain silent or else risk being hunted by creatures that have amazing hearing. To communicate, the cast learned American Sign Language and it was a clever choice to hire deaf actress Millicent Simmonds as the daughter in the family. The film had me worrying about the family’s well being and I found myself holding my breath a lot, (as the silent, “waiting for something to jump” feeling from similar thrillers was stretched out for an entire feature). Krasinski also directs (he’ll next direct Life on Mars and will be seen in the Amazon original series, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan), Industrial Light & Magic worked on the special effects (memorable here!), and the haunting music was composed by Marco Beltrami (who also did last year’s Logan).
