Andre the Giant
I enjoyed HBO’s recent documentary on the famous wrestler Andre the Giant. Known to many as the big guy in The Princess Bride (1987) or in the wrestling world as one of the biggest and most iconic, Andre was a force to reckon with in and out of the ring. Tales of respect and tradition, in addition to a few light hearted anecdotes, populate the film about André Roussimoff. The film begins discussing his early upbringings in France, tracks his rise into the world of wrestling, details his memorable battle with Hulk Hogan in Wrestlemania 3 (which I also just watched) and explores more about the man, his condition, and his legacy. While showing plenty of footage of the man throughout the years (1946-1993, he passed away at age 46), the film tells the story using multiple interviews including stories from Arnold Schwarzenegger, Hulk Hogan, and Vince McMahon. HBO’s documentary provides insights to a man and a condition and is well paced by director Jason Hehir.
