Ready Player One
With the new Avengers film opening in theatres this weekend, I decided it was the best time to get the best seat for a 3D viewing of Ready Player One. Directed by Steven Spielberg (The Post), the film is about a virtual reality game and an adventure that begins when the creator of it passes away. Based on the novel by Ernest Cline and adapted by Zak Penn (The Incredible Hulk), Ready Player One is a visual treat celebrating (and including) many references to pop culture over the last 30-40 years, and will be a lot of fun to free frame! Starring Tye Sheridan (The Yellow Birds) and Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel), the characters solve their problems quickly yet have so many challenges that it makes the 2h20m runtime feel like much less. Nostalgia lovers will really appreciate this film as it is filled with references and fine details only found on repeat viewings. Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) plays the baddie that is fun to cheer against and the technology on display throughout the film (and jokes based on it) are interesting as something we may have in the near future. Ready Player One was filmed in the UK and composer Alan Silvestri (Avengers: Infinity War) added magic with the instrumentals that take us on an adventure itself. With the highest production value of animated effects on display, this light hearted adventure (with brief moments of mature content) is a great option to view on the big screen. Be sure to check out all the different artwork made for the film!
