It
The big new release today is the horror film It, based on Stephen King’s novel from 1986. In 1990 (27 years ago) there was a tv mini-series based on the book (starring Tim Curry and John Ritter) and this version was released one month after another Stephen King property was updated, The Dark Tower (starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey). Filmed primarily in Ontario, It is about a group of kids that battle an evil in a small town that is causing children to go missing. Making a few changes from the novel but is close to the original story, the film is set in the 1980’s and allows for a sequel. The cast is mainly children (they pull off the fear and curiosity of youth well), the sets of the sewers and the old house look great for a horror movie, and the soundtrack helps date the movie (featuring the Cure, the Cult, Anthrax, and Young MC with “Bust a Move”). Stealing scenes is Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise (the makeup and his mannerisms were executed to creepy perfection) and Finn Wolfhard as Richie (running his mouth made for most of the laughs in the film).
