I am looking forward to seeing Donald Glover in the new Star Wars film as a younger Lando Calrissian so I wanted to see more of his work. His supporting role in The Martian was memorable, he will be the voice of Simba in the new live action The Lion King, and he won a Golden Globe for his performance in Atlanta in its first season for Best Lead Actor in a Musical or Comedy. Here he plays Earn, cousin and manager for an Atlanta rapper named Paper Boi, while also struggling to make ends meet and figuring out his baby mama situation. Some scenes have a slow zoom in, drawing me more into the drama of the show, while other times the show feels like it loses itself into a music video- which is part of the charm. A montage or tracking one character, Atlanta brilliantly uses music to help shape the mood and pace of episodes. In addition to Glover’s performance (you will cheer for him to get something right and be safe), the show can boast talented single episode appearances that help populate the fictional world, and is filmed in Atlanta. The finale for season 2 airs on FX tomorrow night, no word yet on a season 3. The show also stars Brian Tyree Henry (Vice Principals), Zazie Beetz (who will next be seen in Deadpool 2), and Lakeith Stanfield (Get Out).
2 Seasons, 21 episodes (2016-)
