The Night Before
To start my holiday movie season, my wife and I watched The Night Before at home on Blu-Ray. We laughed all the way through and enjoyed the comedic trio of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogan, and Anthony Mackie. The three play best friends who routinely party hard at Christmas time and this year go looking for the biggest party they’ve ever been to. Rogan naturally plays the goofy one, constantly battling the effects of numerous narcotics but due to him reigning in the obnoxious laugh and the film having some heart on display, his skills are well used. It also helps this was co-written by Evan Goldberg who often works with Rogan, as they most recently made Neighbors 2 and Sausage Party. Mackie plays the famous friend who flexes his charisma and Levitt is the down on his luck guy, who may or may not get back with an ex-girlfriend. I liked the time spanning story (takes place over multiple years, gives weight to the emotional scenes), the festive sweaters (not limited to just the sight of which as they used them in multiple scenes to make jokes or deal with relationships), the shots of New York city, references to Die Hard, and all of the religious inspired jokes, (all in good fun). This film pairs well with A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, (which I reviewed last year and watched again this year).
